Medical Physiotherapy at Physioflex

What is Medical Physiotherapy?

Medical Physiotherapy is a specialised type of Physiotherapy which helps to rehabilitate physical issues that have resulted from a Neurological condition.

What is a Neurological condition?

Neurological conditions can impact day-to-day activities, change how the body is able to work and include any condition that relates to the brain, spinal cord and nerves. At Physioflex, we are educated and trained to aid with:

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Head Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Guillain Barre Syndrome
  • Functional Neurological Disorders

What types of issues can Medical NeuroPhysiotherapy help with?

NeuroPhysiotherapy can help with complex problems that can be present in people with a neurological problem including:

  • Walking difficulties
  • Balance issues and falling
  • Muscle weakness, paralysis and spasm
  • Changes in muscle tone - low or high
  • Reduced movement, stiffness and motor deficits
  • Changes in sensation
  • Functional difficulties
  • Reduced fitness
  • Pain
  • Stress and anxiety

How does Medical NeuroPhysiotherapy work?

The brain is capable of adapting following an injury, therefore treatment focuses on maximising your recovery and improving your quality of life by rehabilitating the brain. NeuroPhysiotherapy can achieve this by helping the brain to re-learn and form new connections through a process of neuroplasticity.

By providing rehabilitation we aim to normalise movement, improve function and mobility, and focus on achieving as much independence as possible.

What should I expect from my Medical NeuroPhysiotherapy sessions?

You will have a Physiotherapy Assessment on your first visit to find out more about you as a person, what you are having difficulty with and what you want to achieve from Physiotherapy.

NeuroPhysiotherapy can start at any time after your injury. The treatment we will provide will be specific to you, your problems and your needs but may include balance retraining, walking rehabilitation, strengthening, stretching, sensory stimulation, correction of movement patterns and practising functional activities.

Your recovery will depend on how early you begin NeuroPhysiotherapy, the nature and extent of your injury and how often you are able to follow the rehabilitation programme out with of the Physiotherapy sessions. To help you perform your home exercises and maximise your recovery we always invite caregivers to be involved in your treatment programme and will work closely with all of you to achieve your goals.
